WOULD YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO?

Did you know that 80 percent of all cardiac arrests occur outside of a medical setting (usually at home) and almost 60 percent are WITNESSED…..and did you know that 95 percent of those who experience cardiac arrest outside a medical setting NEVER make it to the hospital alive?  If this was your loved one, a co-worker, a friend, an acquaintance, or a fellow human being, would YOU know what to do?

Did you know that brain damage can start to occur in just 4 to 6 minutes from the time of cardiac arrest (the heart stops pumping blood)?  If proper bystander CPR and defibrillation (AED) are performed within the first few minutes of cardiac arrest, a victim’s chance of survival may be doubled.

Did you know that VF sudden cardiac arrest can be reversed if an AED is used within the first few minutes of arrest?  Delivering an electrical shock, as soon as possible, will allow normal rhythm of the heart to resume.  Would you know how to use an AED (defibrillator) if available?

Did you know that sudden cardiac arrest can occur at anytime, anywhere, to anyone?  Most common causes of cardiac arrest are: drug overdose or illegal drug abuse, respiratory arrest, electrocution, drowning, choking, and trauma.  However, cardiac arrest can also occur without any known cause.

Did you know that survival is directly linked to the amount of time between the onset of sudden cardiac arrest and defibrillation?  For every minute of delay, a victim’s chances of survival decrease by 7 to 10 percent.  Early defibrillation within the first 3 to 5 minutes of sudden cardiac arrest is the key to success.  For every minute you delay CPR and defibrillation, the probability of success will diminish.

Did you know that the emergency response time from time of call to actual arrival of paramedics on the scene can be 10 to 15 minutes?  THE ONLY WAY your victim will have a chance at survival under these circumstances is for YOU the bystander to be able to perform effective CPR and defibrillation.  Will YOU be able to step up to the plate when your loved one, co-worker, friend, acquaintance, or fellow human being depends on YOU to be their ONLY CHANCE AT SURVIVAL?
